Healthy gums are not just important to your dental health, but to your overall health as well. Gum disease can cause problems in your mouth such as; swelling, irritation and tooth loss. Gum disease has also been linked with heart disease, diabetes, respiratory problems, and pregnancy complications.

Severe gum disease without treatment can cause teeth to loosen and eventually fall out.

However, you can follow the 5 steps below to prevent gum disease and keep your teeth healthy and strong.

1. Brush your teeth twice a day and use a mouthwash

Brushing your teeth helps remove food particles and plaque build-up between the teeth. Use a fluoridated toothpaste and soft bristle brush.

Replace your toothbrush every few months, or if you notice it is beginning to fray. Use mouthwash in addition to brushing. Mouthwash can reach areas in your mouth that a brush can’t get to, and it helps to reduce the overall bacteria in your mouth.

2. Floss your teeth every day

Brushing alone cannot remove all of the food particles between your teeth and in your gum line. You may find if you haven’t flossed in a while, your gums are tender and bleed a little afterward.

But keep it up every day and your gums will get stronger and stop bleeding during flossing. Flossing also prevents tartar from forming, Tartar is formed from a build-up of plaque and it can only be removed during a professional cleaning.

3. Eat a healthy diet

Eat sugary snacks sparingly. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Fruit and vegetables contain vitamins and minerals which can help to prevent gum disease.

Additionally, eating foods high in omega-3 fatty acids have been found to reduce inflammation in your gums. You can get omega-3 fatty acids from eating foods such as fatty fish (like salmon), nuts, seeds, and plant oils.

4. Don’t smoke

There are many reasons to stop smoking, and healthy gums are one of them. Smoking lowers your immune system, making it harder for your body to fight off a gum infection.

And smoking causes your body to work extra hard to heal once it is recovering from an infection. Smokers have also been found to have more tartar on their teeth than non-smokers.

5. Have professional teeth cleanings twice a year

Taking care of your mouth requires regular check-ups. Your dentist will remove tartar and plaque and check your gums for early signs of disease. If caught early, gum disease can be treated and reversed.

One early symptom of gum disease is gums that bleed easily after brushing. As the disease advances, the gums will pull away from the teeth and the teeth can become loosened. Be sure to get treatment immediately at the first signs of gum disease.
